Background

The GEF-SGP in Ghana implemented a community-based model of landscape management and participatory governance programme to restore the resilience of ecosystems and sustained the landscape that communities depend upon. The project was implemented within the Weto landscape of the Volta Region. The first two phases of the programme, which was completed in December 2018, focused on two components: (i) community development through small grant making, and (ii) knowledge management for capacity building, replication, and up-scaling.

Building on this experience, the primary focus of the third phase of the COMDEKS is to: (a) promote sustainable use of biodiversity and its integration into the management of land, forest, and water resources (COP decision XII/18); (b) provide further guidance on the concept of sustainability in food and agriculture with regard to biodiversity, and to promote and strengthen support for relevant information-sharing and technology transfer among Parties (COP decision XIII/3); and (c) institutionalize the SEPLs model as an effective area-based conservation measures (COP decision XIV/8).
