Ghanaian youths commit to climate action and the SDGs

Nearly 200 Ghanaian youths have renewed their commitment to the attainment of the sustainable development goals and the fight against climate change. This occurred during the 2nd Ghana Youth Conference on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (GYCCC-SD) that took place from 22nd-24th August, 2017 at the British Council Hall in Accra.

The event, supported by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, was organised by Greener Impact International under the theme: “Integrating Ghanaian youth in the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution and the Sustainable Development Agenda”.

The goal was to build the capacity of young professionals on Climate Change and Sustainable Development and to motivate them to support related efforts.

In her opening remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Christine Evans-Klock emphasized the importance of the #SDGs as well as the crucial role Ghanaian youths can play in achieving the global goals.

Through a video message, former President of Ghana, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor, who is also a former UN Envoy on Climate Change shared some insights on the theme and encouraged participants to be agents of change.

Resource persons drawn from government, research, academia, civil society and the private sector made key presentations on global climate change negotiations, Government’s endeavors towards the Paris Agreement and commitment to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), role of youths in implementing the Agreement and the SDGs.

Participants also shared their knowledge and experiences on climate change and the SDGs, prepared project ideas to address environmental and development challenges in Ghana, with the best idea being awarded.

The conference ended successfully with a declaration of the Youth Position Paper and the launch of the Ghana National Youth Alliance on Agenda 2030. These young leaders are now all set to support their communities so that no one is left behind.
