As part of activities marking the 2016 International Volunteers Day (IVD), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) has awarded AIESEC UDS with a cash prize of US$1,000 for emerging winners of a presentation competition on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The International Volunteers Day is celebrated each year on December 5 and provides the opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make their contributions visible, share their values, and promote their work amongst communities, non-governmental organizations, United Nations agencies, government authorities, and the private sector.

“Volunteerism gives communities hope, it gives structure where there is none, it provides critical resources to the communities and countries that need them the most”, said Richard Dictus in a statement read on his behalf by Mr. Louis Kuukpen, UNDP Assistant Country Director for Programmes.

The theme for the 2016 IVD celebration is ‘#Global Applause- Give Volunteers a Hand’ and it seeks to recognize volunteers for their commitment, dedication and passion toward global peace and development.

In Ghana, the UNV initiated an award scheme with AIESEC youth groups comprising tertiary students on various campuses across the country to highlight the SDGs through project presentations that would provide solutions to any of the 17 global goals.

Eight chapters of AIESEC participated in the competition by submitting projects. Out of these, AIESEC on the campus of University for Development Studies (UDS) came tops with a project that sought to reduce the rate of malnutrition in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Present at the event were representatives of UN agencies, AIESEC, France Volontaires, Ghana Red Cross Society, VOLU, students, Volunteer Society of Ghana VSO, youth groups and some volunteers from other African countries.
